During her training, Katherine Rathbun quickly identified gastroenterology as an ever-evolving specialty in which her strong foundation in internal medicine and medical anthropology would make her an effective provider. Since the gastrointestinal system is deeply intertwined with other systems of the body, Katherine strives to provide holistic, evidence-based care. She utilizes advanced diagnostics and treatments to determine a care plan that aligns with her patient’s values and preferences to promote overall wellness and improve quality of life.
Katherine gains great warmth and fulfillment by forming long-term patient-practitioner relationships. She believes that compassion is of utmost importance as patients and their family members navigate chronic and/or acute illness, uncertainty, and recovery. Sharing in their journey is an honor, and she is excited for the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships through both inpatient and outpatient care as a member of the Gastroenterology East care team.
Outside of work, Katherine often hikes and camps with her husband and two dogs while they pursue their goal to visit all 63 National Parks in the US. She also enjoys snowshoeing, reading, laughing with family and friends, and enjoying the wonderfully eclectic food and recreational activities that Portland has to offer.
